Behind on Annual Training? We’ve Got You

As the warm weather starts to settle in and busy season begins ramping up for many employers, it’s a great time to pause and make sure your annual safety and compliance training is either completed or scheduled soon.

Many organizations assume they have minimal training requirements. In reality, most employers have at least a few annual obligations depending on their workforce and industry.

At Center Benefits, we’re here to make this simple.

If you’d like a quick review of your current training obligations (OSHA, DOT, HIPAA, MSHA, public sector, and more), we’re happy to help assess where you stand and what may be required.

Common Annual or Recurring Training Requirements

Below is an overview of training that may apply to your organization:

Safety & OSHA-Related

  • Bloodborne Pathogens (annual)

  • Hazard Communication (required; best practice annually)

  • Respiratory Protection & Fit Testing

  • Reasonable Suspicion Supervisor Training (annual, if drug testing occurs)

  • Silica Exposure (annual, if applicable)

  • Fire Extinguisher Training (if employees are expected to use them)

  • Pesticide Handler Training (annual)

  • Driver Safety Training

DOT & Transportation

  • DOT Supervisor Drug & Alcohol Awareness (initial; often refreshed)

  • Drug & Alcohol Policy training

  • CDL driver-related safety training

MSHA (Mining & Aggregates)

  • MSHA 8-Hour Annual Refresher (mandatory for covered operations)

Healthcare & Confidentiality

  • HIPAA training (if applicable)

  • Bloodborne Pathogens (annual for covered employees)

Public Sector Requirements

  • Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

  • Open Meetings & Public Records Law

  • Ethics Training

  • Mandatory Reporter Training

A Quick Reality Check

Many small employers are surprised to learn they have training obligations:

  • If you have chemicals → Hazard Communication likely applies.

  • If you have CDL drivers → DOT training requirements apply.

  • If you have medical staff or exposure risks → HIPAA & Bloodborne Pathogens apply.

  • If you’re a public entity → harassment, ethics, and open meetings training typically apply.

  • If you operate in mining or aggregates → MSHA annual refresher is mandatory.
